Abstract. Isoprenoids, also known in scientific literature as terpenoids, are a class of naturally occurring organic chemicals derived from the 5-carbon compound isoprene and its derivatives called terpenes, diterpenes, etc. There are approximately 80,000 compounds in this class of compounds. Many terpenoids have significant pharmacological and biological activity and are therefore of interest for medicinal and organic chemistry. Plant terpenoids are used for their aromatic properties and play a role in traditional herbal medicines. However, isoprenoids have a number of other applications, in particular as components of fuels, as well as biomarkers of oils.
