Abstract. Physical treatment methods of fuel oil from hydrogen sulfide consider stripping it with water vapor or nitrogen blowing on mass transfer equipment. To increase efficiency of trays or heads operation it is necessary to reduce viscosity of liquid which is part of mass transfer, in this case by temperature increase. However, with an increase in temperature the processes of sulfur compounds decomposition with the release of hydrogen sulfide begin in fuel oil. Therefore, to perform treatment it is required to select temperature which will ensure maximum decrease of fuel oil viscosity, but not lead to sulfur compounds decomposition.
A method to determine the starting temperature of sulfur compounds decomposition on a laboratory setup is presented. The operating principle of the setup is based on purging fuel oil with nitrogen, followed by trapping hydrogen sulfide and calculating its concentration in the fuel oil. Based on the received experimental data, the temperature of the starting temperature of sulfur compounds decomposition in fuel oil obtained from pipeline oil typical for the center of the European part of the Russian Federation is determined.
