Abstract. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a large class of organic molecules consisting of two or more condensed benzene rings. They occur as resinous materials that are naturally present, for example, in coal and crude oil. They are formed in the combustion of many organic compounds. Despite their toxicity, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are used in technology and a number of industries. In this paper, we consider the main representatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, give their general characteristics, and show the main areas of application of these compounds.
