Abstract. Naphthenates of manganese, chromium, nickel, copper are used as activators of oxidation of base oils of groups I, II, and III according to API classification. It has been found that copper naphthenate initiates the oxidation of base oils to the greatest extent. Metal deactivators Betol-1 and Irgamet 39 reduce the initiating ability to oxidize base oils in the presence of copper naphthenate. Metal deactivators Betol-1 and Irgamet 39 in base oils containing elemental sulfur inhibit its corrosive activity. The Betol-1 metal deactivator can completely replace BASF’s Irgamet-39 metal deactivator in Russian-made turbine oil formulations.
Keywords: base oil, turbine oil, additive package, metal deactivator, metal naphthenates, thermal and oxidative stability.
